Topic:
The future and advancement of app stores.

Description:
The term "App Store" is currently associated with the Apple App Store which is a service for iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It allows users to download "apps" which are small applications from the iTunes Store that were developed with the iOS SDK and published through Apple. While Apple is currently trying to trademark the term "App Store" to solidify its dominance in the virtual marketplace of selling apps, there are many companies that have already began to implement their own "App Store".

Applications:
App Stores, or virtual marketplaces, are used as a way to distribute smaller scale applications on today's mobile devices such as the iPhone. However, the future of these distribution channels go well beyond smartphones. Apple has launched the Mac App Store, a similar implementation of the App Store that drove the success of the iPhone will now be available for the full Mac OSX Operating System. The ease of use coupled with Apple's approval process may sway many developers from releasing their desktop applications on their own and instead deliver them to users through Apple's Mac App Store. While each app store or virtual market generally carries similar apps they all present them in a different interface. Apple uses it's popular Itunes Music store to sell it's apps, whereas Droid uses a market feature.

Presently app stores include a wide variety of apps including:
  • Games
  • Reference apps
  • Educational apps
  • Productivity apps
  • Business tools
  • Lifestyle apps
  • and more..

In the future we predict that mobile devices will become more powerful and the applications offered in app stores will improve accordingly. While phones are currently a companion device to personal computers, in the future phones will be able to become a users primary device for high end software.
