YouTube literally means “global unification of interests via video production”. Of course, the designers added the user abilities of leaving comments and rating each others videos, as well as a beautiful User Interface that links users to their favorite videos. Every video has its own topic or following. Each member has endless space for videos and topics of discussion, free sign up, and the connectivity package (favorites and easily saving your favorite videos forever). YouTube is leading the way in facilitating global communication blowing past its 300 million account mark, and its 200 million views a day mark.(

YouTube was founded in 2005 by former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. The website received funding from Sequoia Capital in November of the same year. In 2006 YouTube was purchased by Google for $1.6 billion. YouTube has grown to be the biggest video sharing website on the internet to date and is estimated to receive and is currently ranked as the fourth most visited site on the web.

At its heart YouTube is a video hosting website that allows any user to upload videos that can be viewed by the website's visitors, and, while uploading videos does require registration, there is no registration required in order to view them. This has led to a variety of content being hosted on the website including music videos, web shows, T.V. clips and amateur videos.

YouTube has become immensely popular for a variety of reasons. For one, it is user generated content which means that people put whatever they want to on YouTube. So, if you post something that you find interesting chances are that other people will find it interesting as well. This means that most of the stuff on YouTube is interesting. Another thing that attributes to YouTube's popularity is that the majority of its videos are short, i.e. under 10 minutes. Since most people's attentions spans are already about 10 minutes long to begin with, people can watch one YouTube video after another and not lose interest in the videos they are watching. This is why people are able to spend hours watching YouTube videos and never get bored.
