Description:

Reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web. Users provide all of the content and decide, through voting, what's good
(external image aupmod.png) and what's junk (external image adownmod.png). Links that receive community approval bubble up towards #1, so the front page is constantly in motion and filled with fresh, interesting links. The name reddit is a play on words, "I read it, on reddit".

Reddit is made up of hundreds of sub-communities, each focused on a specific topic. There's a reddit for science, a reddit for music, and probably a reddit for your nearest city. By default, new users are subscribed to a selection of the most popular ones, but you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of the site if you take the time to subscribe to ones that appeal to you. After doing so, the front page will change to show a customized listing tailored to your interests.

History:

Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, both college graduates from University of Virginia founded Reddit. Christopher Slowe joined the team in 2005. The owner of Wired, Condé Nast Publications, acquired Reddit on October 31, 2006. Reddit became an open source project in 2008. The same year, the team grew to include Erik Martin, Jeremy Edberg, David King, and Mike Schiraldi. September 6, 2011, Reddit gain its independence from Condé Nast. Reddit now operates as a separate subsidiary.

Features:

A reddit can be created by any registered user. It takes 30 days of being a member for a link to appear on the user's homepage to do so. Examples of different reddits include: Pictures, News, Food, Gaming, Nature, and Celebrity Gossip to name a few. By subscribing to individual reddits, a user is able to customize their front page to the topics of their liking. A general front page is offered as well by subscribing to no individual reddits.

Demographics:

The audience whom which reddit will most likely appeal to is people in their early teens to young adults in college. To promote their website and expand their fan base, reddit has made their website available through a cell phone app on both the iPhone (iReddit) and the Android (Reddit Mobile). In addition to having mobile apps, reddit also is connected with Facebook in the terms that you can like something on reddit, and that like will show up on your Facebook feed. This allows non-reddit users to become aware of reddit.com. Also, other websites such as imgur.com and tumblr.com have links from their website to reddit's website that allow users to expand their fan base.
