Windows Server 2008
Window's server 2008 was officially released on Febuary 27, 2008 and is the most up to date Microsoft Windows' server line of operating systems. Microsoft used Windows server 2008 to bring together a series of different releases that were tied to its server OS and integrated them using the Windows Vista code to produce a more solid and reliable server.

History of Windows and Events leading up to Windows Server 2008
Around 1993 was when it all began, Windows first introduced Windows NT advanced server, and this was the basic network operating server. Following the release of that in 1994 Windows enhanced it and released Windows NT server 3.5. In 1995 Windows really seemed to catch up to speed with their release of the NT server 3.51. In that same year they released Windows 95 Desktop Operating System. This was a huge milestone for Microsoft because it introduced the first graphical user interface. But in 1996 things really began to enhance with the release of NT server 4.0. It introduced Internet Information Server 2.0 Web Server into the Microsoft Server operating system package, this meant you now had a free web server. Then in 1997, NT Server 4.0 came out and this was an enhanced version for large corporate customers. After this in 1998 the terminal server edition came out and this gave the ability for non Windows clients to connect to the network. In 2000 Windows saw a massive upgrade with the release of Windows Server 2000. It was the first time we saw XML support in Microsoft server products. then in 2003 microsoft launched Windows Server 2003, and this was the first time we saw the .NET framework funtionality on the server. in the 2003 version we also saw many improvements in the security of the server. Following the 2003 versions Windows went through a series of trial and errors to finally reach the enhanced Windows Server 2008.

The Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 provides the following benefits:

•Reduced maintenance - Because the Server Core installation option installs only what is required to have a manageable server for the AD DS, AD LDS, DHCP Server, DNS Server, File Services, Print Services, and Streaming Media Services roles, less maintenance is required than on a full installation of Windows Server 2008.

•Reduced attack surface - Because Server Core installations are minimal, there are fewer applications running on the server, which decreases the attack surface.

•Reduced management - Because fewer applications and services are installed on a server running the Server Core installation, there is less to manage.

•Less disk space required - A Server Core installation requires only about 1 gigabyte (GB) of disk space to install and approximately 2 GB for operations after the installation.
